Jakarta World Cinema
Jakarta World Cinema (previously called Jakarta World Cinema Week), is an annual film festival held since 2022 in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. Currently held in September, JWC screens films from both Indonesian and world cinema, offline in CGV Grand Indonesia theater, and online in streaming platform KlikFilm. The third edition of JWC will be held on 21-28 September 2024.
History
JWC aims to screen the biggest films from the world's most prestigious festivals. During its first edition, the offline and online screenings were attended by 22.138 visitors. The second edition was attended by 26.450 visitors. Meanwhile, the third edition was attended by 42.500 visitors.
Festival Program
JWC's annual program consists of film screenings, workshops, and film talks. Several notable films that were screened in JWC were Triangle of Sadness (Ruben Östlund, 2022), Anatomy of a Fall (Justine Triet, 2023), Monster (Hirokazu Koreeda, 2023), Perfect Days (Wim Wenders, 2023), and The Zone of Interest (Jonathan Glazer, 2023). In 2023, JWC screened 90 films from 54 countries.
Several films have also had their South East Asian premiere in JWC, such as About Dry Grasses, The Taste of Things, Fallen Leaves, La Chimera, A Brighter Tomorrow, and Four Daughters which were screened during JWC 2023. In 2022, Three Thousand Years of Longing, Holy Spider, Tori and Lokita, Both Sides of the Blade, R.M.N., Hit the Road, No Bears, Unicorn Wars, Zero Fucks Given also had their South East Asian premiere at JWC.
Awards
The festival started out as a non-competitive film festival, with the exception of the Audience Award which was given based on voting by the festival audience. The winner is announced during the closing night of the festival. The recipient of the JWC 2022 Audience Award was Rebel by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. In JWC 2023, the award was given to Inshallah a Boy by Amjad Al Rasheed.
During its third edition, JWC launched a new competition section with First Feature Competition, which awarded Best Film and Best Director titles for first-time directors.
